The crankshaft is a key part in engine construction. New requirements due to lightweight automotive construction and higher efficiency in engine technology require precision within ever tighter tolerances when hardening crankshafts.

Crankshafts must also have combined material properties: high-precision inductively hardened surfaces for wear-free and long-lasting running properties and elasticity of the component body for high torque absorption. Tread hardening improves wear resistance. The radius hardening also offers an increase in the bending fatigue strength of the crankshaft, which is required for high-performance crankshafts as well as for medium-sized and large crankshafts. It is used, among other things, in cars and trucks and as a large crankshaft for locomotives, ship propulsion systems or for large diesel engines for generators, compressors or pumps.
