Learn more about Industrial Automation

Industrial Automation is the application of specific techniques, software and/or equipment in a particular machine or industrial process, with the objective of increasing its efficiency, maximizing production with the lowest consumption of energy and/or raw materials, lower waste emission. of any kind, better security conditions, whether material, human or information related to this process, or even to reduce the effort or human interference on this process or machine. It is a step beyond mechanization, where human operators are provided with machinery to assist them in their work.

Among the electronic devices that can be applied are computers, robots or other devices capable of performing logic operations, such as programmable logic controllers, micro controllers, DCSs or CNCs. These equipments in some cases replace human tasks or perform others that the human being cannot perform.

Industrial Automation essentially consists of choosing, among the various technologies available to us, those that best adapt to the process to be developed and the best way to interconnect them to always guarantee the best cost/benefit ratio.

Industrial automation is usually divided into 3 levels:

  • Field Level - consisting of the elements to be controlled (eg Motors) and the detection elements (eg Sensors)
  • Control Level – As the name implies, it is the level where the elements that will control the process are located (eg Automata)
  • Supervision Level - Comprises the human-machine interface and data acquisition programs (this level must not directly interfere with the operation of the process)

Another important point when doing Industrial Automation is to think about the future, to think that the initial functionalities of a machine and/or process, in most cases, may be very far from what it will have in the future.

To make the Industrial Automation of a given process viable, there is a preliminary need to carry out a technical study (also called basic engineering or data collection) that will verify all the needs for the desired process, serving as a subsidy for the identification, analysis and determining the best control strategy and choosing the hardware and/or software resources required for the application.
