Ball Thrust Bearings
Ball thrust bearings consist of three parts; a shaft and housing washer that have annular grooves in them and a caged ball bearing assembly that is sandwiched in between them. These bearings are classified into those with flat seats or aligning seats, depending on the shape of the outer race seat (housing washer). Ball thrust bearings can sustain axial loads but no radial loads. Pressed steel cages and machined bronze cages are usually used. Assembly and mounting is a simple operation as the parts are separate. They support axial loads in one direction. Shaft washers have a ground bore to enable an interference fit. The bore of the housing washer is turned and always larger than the shaft washer bore.
Axial loads in both directions can be achieved by adding a shaft washer. Double-Direction Ball Thrust Bearings consist of one shaft washer, two housing washers and two ball cage assemblies. Cages in Double-Direction ball thrust bearings are the same as those in Single-Direction bearings.
