Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Cylindrical Roller Bearings have hardened and ground rollers which are in linear contact with the raceway of the inner and outer rings.  The rollers are contained in a bronze or steel cage and are guided by ground ribs in either the outer ring or the inner ring.  They can sustain a high radial load and are suitable for high speeds.  In addition, the cylindrical configuration allows the inner ring to have some axial movement relative to the outer ring.

The typical configurations for single-row cylindrical roller bearings are designated as N, NU, NJ, NUP, and NF.  These configurations permit the inner and outer rings to be separable.  Some Cylindrical roller bearings have no ribs on either the inner or outer ring, so the rings can move axially relative to each other.  Those cylindrical roller bearings in which either the inner or outer ring has two ribs and the other has one rib are capable of taking some axial load in one direction.

Cages are made from a variety of materials, with pressed steel, machined bronze or molded polyamide most commonly used.  Inner and outer rings are manufactured with hardened and ground bearing steel.
