AboutDatum World HQ

Datum Electronics is a leading manufacturer and a supplier of the ground-breaking Torque and shaft power measurement devices, namely Torque sensors, torque transducers, torque meters, marine shaft power meters, load cells, amplifiers power take off (PTO) shaft sensors and wind turbine monitoring systems.

Headquartered in the UK, Datum Electronics has a long- established presence worldwide through an extensive network of resellers and distributors in more than 30 countries which include Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Italy, Singapore South Korea, South Africa, Sweden and the USA.

Our Business is completely based upon our customer’s requirements and preferences. We are able to manufacture and develop standard torque measurement devices, as well as custom engineered OEM torque sensor products, or mid to high volume torque sensors, providing high accuracy, repeatability and reliability across the extensive range of our torque sensing solutions.

Datum has heavily invested into research and development over the last five years and continues to make every effort to stand as the leader of torque and strain measurement technology. In the last year alone, the company has made two patent applications for new products that, will be coming to market in 2018. We have also collaborated with the major OEM customers to develop multiple torque sensing solutions, allowing customers to integrate torque transducers and strain sensors into their existing machinery in a more cost-efficient way.

Datum Electronics is situated on the Isle of Wight, the home of the foil strain gauge, developed by Saunders Roe, who has obtained early patents for the foil gauges (later sold to Vishay Measurements) and the home of Robert Hooke, who worked on the Law’s of Elasticity (hence “Hooke’s Law”), upon which all strain sensors are based. The Isle of Wight has a profound technical history which includes the first European satellite launch system, helicopters, high-speed ship turbines, the first shaft power measurement system, the hovercraft, early jet fighter, flying boat technology and military radar systems. Many of the vital workers of Datum are the sons and grandsons of those, who worked on the projects mentioned above.

Over the span of 25 years Datum Electronics have focused on the design, manufacture and the supply of strain sensors, along with torque & shaft power measurement products.

Our pioneering strain gauge-based expertise & technology have been successfully used for many decades in various industrial sectors for a number of applications, including product torque testing, drive system R&D, validation of shaft power levels for quality control and compliance, strain sensors for vehicle weighing and safety, vehicle drive shafts, ships shaft power system and other, where measuring torque & shaft power transmitted through shafts is key to efficiency and safety.
