Double disc grinding

Double disc grinding is a highly efficient grinding method that reduces pre-machining costs up to 50% and provides dimensional tolerances to ±.0002″, parallelism to .0002″, and flatness to .0002″. Double disc grinding uses two opposing abrasive wheels to simultaneously grind two sides of a blank. In one operation, equal amounts of material are removed from both sides making this a very cost-effective grinding option

Our equipment will handle most any configuration of parts and is also capable of handling flat stock up to 30′ in length. U.G.C. is an excellent source for large production runs when cost effectiveness is important. In addition to thrufeed and paddle type double disc grinders, U.G.C. also uses chain hold down grinders for bushings, pins, shafts. Gun feed grinders are capable of handling odd shaped items. Flat bar stock is ground on widths and thickness in long lengths. We now have 12 machines.

Grinding two sides of a part at the same time provides greater control of dimensional tolerances, flatness, and parallelism allowing double disc grinding to achieve tolerances superior to Blanchard grinding or fly cutting. Additionally, double disc grinding provides surface finishes of up to 16 Ra on aluminum and up to 8 Ra on ferrous alloys.

Internal stress relief is another double disc grinding benefit. Simultaneously removing equal amounts of stock from two sides of a blank reduces residual stress. Less residual stress improves art stability during secondary operations and final machining.

High volume grinding or automated double disc grinding – furnishes cost effective thickness sizing for small parts such as fine blanked stamped, die cast, and sintered metal parts. Through automation, the production costs of large quantity runs are significantly reduced.
