What are optical sensors?

The task of optoelectronic sensors is to convert optical information into signals that can be evaluated electrically. This is primarily limited to visible light, as well as infrared radiation and ultraviolet light. Optical sensors are based on the conversion of signals through the quantum mechanical effects of light.

For example, photocells use the external photoelectric effect. Optical sensors can also be based on the inner photoelectric effect, in which case they consist of semiconductors in which charge carriers are created when exposed to light, which changes the electrical properties of the material. The incident light therefore causes either a change in electrical conductivity (photoresistance) or a photovoltage (photodiode or photoelement). A variant of the inner photo effect is the depletion layer photo effect, it is used in photo transistors and also photo diodes. Optical sensors in digital photo and video cameras (CMOS and CCD sensors) and in pattern recognition (e.g., barcode scanners) are often referred to as image sensors.

Optical sensors are used primarily in automation technology. In addition to simple detection tasks, they are used there for position measurements (e.g., light barriers), speed and angle measurements (e.g. incremental encoders) and distance measurements.
