Double Torsion Springs

A double torsion spring is a spring that combines two separate torsion springs into one unit. It consists of two sets of coils: one wound clockwise, the other counterclockwise, and they are bridged at the middle. The total force of a double torsion spring is equal to the sum of the forces of the individual springs. Torsion springs or torsional springs and double torsion springs have a wide range of applications and are typically found in all major household appliances, medical devices, military/aerospace devices, and more.

Tips for Designing a Torsion Spring:

One of the key steps in the design phase is determining how to counteract the effects of friction. This may be done by including a pitch, which is the amount of space between each coil, in the spring’s design while also making sure that the inside diameter is able to provide clearance when the spring achieves maximum deflection. The end configurations, or legs, can be manipulated into any shape and size, but overall cost should be kept in mind. The legs can be as simple as straight legs, hooks, or angular bends, and their shape may help with preserving the part. More complex geometries include full or multiple loops or a number of offsets in order to fit the assembly designs. All design considerations can be discussed with one of our design consultants.
