Unlike a double-sided PCB, multilayers have four or more layers.
Optionally, various layers can be integrated in the core of the printed circuit board for the top and bottom layers.
Normally, the assembly, ground, signal and soldering sides are located on a standard four-layer multilayer.
For the metallized holes that connect layers, a distinction is made between:
- Vias that are completely continuous
- Blind vias that lead from the outside only to a defined inner layer
- Buried vias that connect two or more inner layers together
Steadily increasing packing densities due to miniaturized components and microchip increasingly demand additional layers. In addition, signal and power electronics are repeatedly placed on a circuit board.
The classic products today include four- to eight-layer multilayers. In terms of production technology, multilayers with up to 40 layers can also be realized here.
However, it should be noted that the price rises above average here with the number of layers.
By default, we always choose symmetrical structures due to the production process.
The thickness of the multilayers depends on the number of layers and the insulation of the layers with each other.
