DESCRIPTION

The term FFE (Fundamental Front End) or Smart AFE means a bidirectional AC-DC converter in which the DC voltage is not controlled.

It works like a diode bridge, but it also allows energy to be recovered to the grid. FFE acts only on the fundamental component of the voltage (no PWM).

FEATURES

  • The characteristics of the FFE are similar to those of a diode bridge: IGBTs are used only for recovery. In this way the losses on the bridge are limited only to conduction losses (no PWM losses), having an advantage in terms of size. Furthermore, the fact of not having PWM allows to have a smaller line side inductance and not to have the LC filter.
