In 1930, Bernard van Leer came from Amsterdam to Vreeland to set up a new factory. This location is in a beautiful location on the Vecht. The historic Brugzicht building has been around since 1723. This building houses the Strategic Business Unit (SBU), the European headquarters, as well as the Business Unit (BU) Benelux and Scandinavia. On the premises behind Brugzicht, our factories and the offices with the sales department.
Drum Linings
That Greif focuses on the needs of the customer has produced spectacular results. Our paint factory in Vreeland has developed a number of perfected "Drum Liners". Today these are sold worldwide and are part of our "Regular Drum Linings System". Our branch in Rotterdam-Europoort exists since 1993. This factory is the largest steel barrel factory in the world. This is also where our Operational Support department (formerly R & D) is housed. The history of the factory in Lier goes back to 1929. On the current site was the "The Standard Drum and Barrel Company", later Usines Standard. In 1934 Van Leer took over that company. At that time, cylinders for liquid gases were produced and reconditioned and from 1965 also stationary tanks for domestic and industrial use. In the early 1980s, the factory experienced serious consequences from the declining demand for gas cylinders and tanks. In 1995, the cloth fell for the production of the LPG tanks. At that time, Van Leer produced 200 liters of steel barrels. A production that became increasingly important. In 1998, the production of plastic barrels of 200 liters was started according to the Valérex® process, in 2002 a second line was even taken into use.
In 2001, the American Grail took over from Van Leer Industrial Packaging, with the Van Leer name definitively disappearing. The branch in Ghent originated from the SOMECA company, founded at the end of the 19th century. After some more acquisitions, the Ghent factory was transferred to Blagden Packaging in 1985. In December 2006 the factory was finally sold to Greif. In the beginning buckets and radiators and later still plastic barrels were the core business. Today, Ghent specializes in steel barrels. The choice was made for those vessels with a large complexity where extra services can be delivered to the customer.
