AboutFraser Hydraulic Power Ltd
FHP began its life in 1986 when brothers, Ron and Peter, funded the start-up of the company with the sale of their small yacht. Initially FHP only carried out repairs on hydraulic systems in factories and ship yards around the Tyneside area. This early iteration of the company had two employees, Ron and the brother’s mother, Ellen, and was based out of a small starter unit in Chirton.
Nearly three decades and four FHP locations later and the business FHP has grown into an international business supplying electro-hydraulic systems to all corners of the world. We can confidently state we are a global business with about 60% of our products being exported.
The nature of the work and the customer base has also seen dramatics changes. The industrial hydraulics has diminished as manufacturing companies have closed or moved their production to overseas locations, however the subsea and oil & gas markets have grown and FHP has acquired new skills, personnel and learned to adapt new technologies to provide innovative and reliable solutions.
FHP now operates from a new custom built 28000 ft2 unit on Neptune Energy Park in Walker, Newcastle. The facility is one of the most modern on the river and includes a 10t and 20t overhead cranes as well as direct access to a deep water quay with a 500t crane.
The FHP team of technicians and engineers provide mechanical, hydraulic and electrical engineering expertise. We design and build systems for laying subsea cables and umbilicals and specialist bespoke systems. Although we do not manufacture on site, through our network of mainly local sub-contract suppliers we are self-sufficient in all areas from design concept through to installation and commissioning.
FHP also operates a continuous apprentice training scheme taking young people and giving them the opportunity to become accomplished technicians and engineers working in locations worldwide.
In addition to design and build FHP has developed a large hire fleet providing equipment and engineers to the subsea telecoms, renewables and oil and gas industries.
FHP continues to grow and invest in people, expertise and systems to meet the demands of our customers. This latest move is another step to the continuation of maintaining the very best engineering expertise in the North East of England, a heritage that we want to continue long into the future.
