Introduction:

Valio has announced a significant investment of approximately €30 million in the construction of a new cheese maturation warehouse at its Joensuu production facility in Finland.

Features:

Construction of the warehouse extension, which will be integrated with the existing production plant, will commence in May 2025 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The project includes both the expansion of the maturation warehouse and the automation of its operations to enhance production efficiency.

In parallel with the new construction, the existing maturation warehouse will be renovated to support the relocation of production lines from Valio’s Vantaa facility. Specifically, cheese slicing, grating, and processed cheese production will be transferred to Joensuu. This development is part of Valio’s broader strategy to gradually consolidate cheese production operations in Joensuu between 2025 and 2027.

Following the completion of the investment, the entire cheese production process—from milk pasteurisation to maturation and final processing—will be centralized under one roof in Joensuu. Milk sourced from Valio farms will be processed into cheese, salted, matured in the new warehouse, and then further processed into blocks, slices, grated products, or processed cheese.

The new warehouse will feature a high degree of automation, delivering operational efficiency and cost savings. The facility will also focus on maximizing the utilization of by-products and side streams from cheese production, in line with Valio’s sustainability and efficiency goals.
