Introduction:
ABB has announced plans to invest approximately $200 million in its medium-voltage manufacturing operations across Europe over the next three years. The investment aims to increase production capacity, support the adoption of next-generation power distribution technologies, and strengthen supply capabilities for customers upgrading and modernising their power infrastructure.
Features:
The investment will enhance ABB’s ability to supply medium-voltage switchgear and grid automation solutions. A major part of the programme includes the construction of a new $100 million manufacturing plant in Dalmine, Italy, to meet rising demand for air-insulated and SF₆-free switchgear and circuit breakers.
An additional $100 million will be allocated to capacity expansion projects at ABB facilities in Rakovski, Bulgaria; Vaasa, Finland; Ratingen, Germany; Skien, Norway; and Przasnysz, Poland. These upgrades will increase the production of technologies such as gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), vacuum interrupters and protection relays, helping to improve the reliability and resilience of power distribution networks.
Growing demand for these technologies is being driven by grid modernisation projects, the integration of renewable energy sources, the expansion of data centres and the shift towards more sustainable energy solutions.
The investments are expected to increase manufacturing capacity, improve product availability and reduce delivery times, enabling customers in Europe and other regions to better respond to evolving energy requirements.
