Investment casting improves the quality of parts by using high-grade alloys for cast parts. A wax pattern is first used to form an expendable ceramic mold which is then filled with molten metal to produce the final product. This process allows for complex designs with intricate features and fills, such as through holes, slots, or complicated profiles. Investment casting allows companies to save money over other manufacturing processes that use machining to produce finished pieces.
This method can also be used to produce high dimensional accuracy – tolerances as low as 0.003 in (0.076 mm) can be as thin as 0.015 in (0.4 mm). This flexibility allows investment casting to be used in aerospace, medical devices, sports equipment, etc.
