South Bend Form Tool has invested in three EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines to produce very precise parts to meet the requirements of our customers. One of our machines is the Sodick 320, which uses Sodick's linear motor technology providing instantaneous servo time, which maximizes cutting efficiency and accuracy. Since there are no ball screws or couplings, backlash is totally eliminated. This provides several advantages, including improved positioning and cutting accuracy, while providing smooth and vibration-free table movement. The wire EDM machining process is an electrothermal process in which a thin metal single-strand wire (electrode), in conjunction with deionized water (used to conduct electricity), allows the wire to cut through any hard conductive materials by the use of heat from electrical sparks that can easily machine complex parts and precision components. Depending upon the material thickness and makeup, the angle of cut can be made up to 30 degrees off the vertical axis.
