What is Clamshell Packaging

Most commonly made of thermoformed transparent plastic, clamshell packaging gets its name from its likeness to a clam shell. Similar in shape and function, clamshell packaging is a rigid container that consists of one continuous piece composed of two halves joined together with a hinge. This allows the packaging to open and close, like a clamshell.

Another option is for the packaging to be permanently sealed rather than retain its open and close function. This deters theft and provides even greater security for the enclosed product from accidental opening.

Clamshell packaging can be customized with insert cards that can display graphics or detailed product information. Insert cards allow clamshell packaging to provide a marketing function as well as functionality.
