The Printed Circuits in Aluminum (IMS - insulated Metal substrates) consist of a metal base plate covered by a thin layer of dielectric (usually an epoxy based layer) and in this case instead of using the usual base material for the circuit (vetronite), aluminum is used as a carrier for copper.

Due to this type of construction, the IMS can only house components on the copper side and in most applications the base plate is attached to a heatsink to provide cooling, generally using thermal grease and screws.
