Complete Installations and Maintenance for Structures and Runways

Crane 1 performs engineering and fabrication of crane runway systems to specifically meet the needs of your application. Our runway systems are designed and certified by our in-house professional engineer to current applicable industrial standards to maximize safety, productivity and service life. We also provide engineering on existing structures to verify the integrity of an existing system for the current loadings or for an increase in capacity and/or adding bays for expansion. Crane 1 performs comprehensive runway system analysis with a detailed report to assist in your facilities planning.

Design Considerations

  • BUILDING-SUPPORTED RUNWAY SYSTEMWhen crane loadings are included in the building design, shelves or haunches off the building columns will support runway girders and rail on which the crane will travel. Crane 1 can easily engineer the best runway size and tieback method to minimize runway material and fabrication labor. Our skilled installers ensure that the runways are installed to CMAA tolerances, ensuring that your cranes run smoothly without the undue wheel and rail wear often caused by poor installation jobs.
  • FREESTANDING RUNWAY STRUCTUREWhen there is no building structure to attach the runway columns, bracing or other means must be designed into the runway structure to resist longitudinal and lateral forces of the moving crane loads. Freestanding runway structures require considerably more steel than other methods of support.
  • SEMI-FREE STANDING RUNWAY STRUCTUREWhen a new or existing building has enough reserve capacity to resist the longitudinal (along the length of the crane runway) and lateral (across the width of the runway) forces, Crane 1 Services can attach the columns and runways to these buildings, reducing the amount of steel required to produce an overhead crane and runway system. These systems are ideal where the requirement is for minimum floor obstructions and where maximum headroom (hook height) is required. Crane 1 Services provides the engineering support to help you determine if your building has the required strength to utilize a money-saving semi-freestanding crane runway system. A main component of a semi-freestanding overhead traveling crane system is a top-running single or double girder bridge crane designed with the bridge on the top of the runway. The crane runway is positioned on self-supporting columns.
  • MULTIPLE CRANES SHARING THE SAME RUNWAYFor greatest use and versatility of a work area and to safely handle heavy loads of the same or different capacities on the same runway, two or more overhead cranes of different capacities often share the same runway. As an example, a runway system can be designed to support a 10-ton crane along with two 5-ton cranes. Depending on the runway design, there may or may not be restrictions to the allowable distance between the loaded cranes. A 5-ton crane runway could just as easily be used to lift 10 tons as long as it is equipped with two 5-ton cranes and they are separated by enough distance through mechanical separation (buffers) or electronically with distance sensing devices to keep the cranes separated so that the runway is never overloaded.
