Cylindrical roller bearings have higher radial capacity when compared to ball bearings. The most common types of cylindrical roller bearings are NJ, NU, NUP, NF and N. The NJ type and NF type will take some axial load in one direction only. The N type NU type will only take radial load with no axial load carrying capacity. The NUP type is designed to take some axial loading in both directions. The NN type and NNU type are double row designs and are also available, but less commonly used.
These bearings are typically used as the free or float bearing in an electric motor or in belt driven or non-direct coupled applications on the drive end of a motor, where heavy radial loads are prevalent.
