nctional safety is focused on reducing the level of risk in a device or system by identifying potentially hazardous conditions and enabling corrective actions to avoid or reduce the impact of an accident. It depends on active, automatic safety technology to respond to a potentially dangerous situation.

IEC 61508 defines functional safety as freedom from unacceptable risk of physical injury or of damage to the health of people, either directly, or indirectly as a result of damage to property or equipment.

SIL is a term that means Safety Integrity Level. It is used in most Functional Safety standards including several industry specific standards. Safety instrumented system (SIS) is an implementation of one or more safety instrumented functions (SIF). A SIS is composed of any combination of one or more sensors, logic solvers, and final elements. A SIS usually has a number of safety functions with different safety integrity levels (SIL) so it is best avoid describing it by a single SIL.
