Buying Guide to Blowers & Industrial Fans - Types, Applications, Manufacturers and Suppliers

An Overview - Blowers and Industrial Fans

Industrial fans and blowers are majorly used for industrial process requirements and for ventilation. In a fan system, fans generate a pressure to move air (or gases) against a resistance caused by ducts, dampers or other components. Energy is received by a fan rotor from a rotating shaft and then it is transmitted it to the air.

Industrial Blowers are electro-mechanical or mechanical devices that are used to incite gas flow through process stacks, electronics chassis, ducting and so on. Gas flow can be induced wherever flow is needed for aspirating, cooling, ventilating, exhausting, and conveying etc.

While choosing the best industrial blower, the key specifications required to consider are the anticipated application, port design, blower type as well as the parameters of flow capacity, dimensions, electrical ratings and so on.

Blowers are used to cool electronic enclosures, increase airflow on engines, and they are configured in a variety of designs such as centrifugal flow or rotary lobe styles.

Difference between Blowers, and Industrial Fans

Industrial fans and blowers are differentiated by

•    Method they are used to move the air, and
•    System pressure they must operate against

As per American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) -  the specific ratio i.e. the ratio of the discharge pressure over the suction pressure is used for defining the industrial fans, blowers.

Types of Blowers

a) Centrifugal Blowers

Centrifugal blowers are machines whose major function is to provide and accommodate a large flow of air or gas to various parts of other structures or buildings. They use high-speed impellers or blades to transmit velocity to air or other gases.

These type of blowers offer a number of blade orientations, including backward curved, forward curved, and radial. Some centrifugal blowers are directly coupled to drive motors.

Applications:

•    Centrifugal blowers are used for combustion air supplies, on cooling and drying systems, for fluid bed aerators, with air conveyor systems, for dust control, etc.
•    They are built as close-coupled units.

b) Positive Displacement Blowers

Positive Displacement blowers are alike positive displacement pumps. They use mechanical power to squeeze fluid and thereby increase pressure and/or velocity.

There are two types of positive displacement blowers. They are:

i) Rotary Vane

ii) Rotary Lobe

Positive displacement blowers are often driven by direct-coupled electric motors but they can be driven by gas engines, hydraulic motors, etc in unusual circumstances.

Applications: Positive displacement blowers are also used in pneumatic conveying, and for sewage aeration, filter flushing, and gas boosting, as well as for moving gases of all kinds in the petrochemical industries.

Types of Industrial Fans

Industrial fans fall into two general categories. They are:

a) Centrifugal flow

b) Axial flow

In centrifugal flow, the direction of the airflow is changed twice. i.e. firstly while entering and second while leaving (forward curved, backward curved or inclined, radial).

In axial flow, air enters and leaves the fan with no change in direction (propeller, tube axial, vane axial).

Factors to be considered in the selection of Blowers

Blowers are specified on the basis of pressure and flow rate. Blowers can be picked based on the ratio of system inlet pressure and outlet pressure.

Here are some of the important attributes to be considered in the selection of blowers:

1) Blower Type

2) Blades

3) Flow Capacity

4) Maximum Operating pressure

5) Port Design

6) Additional Features
