Metso to deliver an iron ore sintering plant to India

27 October 2025

Metso has received a EUR 32 million order from SAIL to supply its third iron ore sintering plant at the IISCO Steel Plant in Asansol, West Bengal. Part of SAIL’s 4MTPA expansion project, the 2.67 MTPA plant will feature Metso’s Emission Optimised Sintering (EOS) technology, reducing CO₂ emissions by over 54,000 tonnes annually and supporting sustainable steel production.

Metso has received an order to deliver the third iron ore sintering plant to be built at Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in Asansol, West Bengal, India. The order has been recognized in the Ferrous business during the third quarter of 2025. The Ferrous business is currently being divested and presented as discontinued operations. The value of the order is approximately EUR 32 million.

Metso’s delivery includes comprehensive engineering, equipment supply, and supervision of installation and commissioning for the new sintering plant. The plant has a capacity of 2.67 million tonnes per annum and is part of SAIL ISP’s landmark 4MTPA crude steel expansion project. The order includes Metso’s Emission Optimised Sintering (EOS) technology, which will significantly reduce solid fuel consumption, cut CO2 emissions by more than 54,000 tonnes per year, and contribute to SAIL’s drive for a more sustainable steel production. Expected to be operational in 2029, this modern sinter production line supports India’s drive toward higher efficiency and a more sustainable future.

“Together, we are taking a decisive step towards low-carbon steelmaking,” says Mr. Surajit Mishra, Director-In-Charge, (Burnpur & Durgapur Steel Plant) SAIL.

“We are pleased to partner with SAIL on their landmark project, which underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable steel production. We are happy that the project incorporates our EOS technology, which will help SAIL ISP’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency,” says Attaul Ahmad, Vice President, Ferrous & Heat Transfer business line at Metso.

Metso and SAIL have a longstanding partnership in the field of traveling grate sintering plants, with Metso having successfully delivered four sintering plants to SAIL to date.

Metso’s travelling grate sinter technology delivers uniform pellets, ensuring high performance and quality with low investment and operating costs, as well as reduced energy consumption and emissions. You can read more about it on our website.
