Metso expands HPGR footprint with equipment orders from Fortress Minerals for their iron ore and copper projects in Malaysia

2 September 2025

Metso has received an order from Fortress Minerals Inc. to supply minerals processing equipment for Malaysia’s Bukit Besi iron ore and Mengapur copper projects. The scope includes HRC™ HPGRs, Vertimill®, SMD, TankCell® flotation cells, pumps, screens, and hydrocyclones. The energy-efficient grinding flowsheet highlights Metso’s leadership in sustainable comminution, supporting Fortress Minerals’ operational performance and long-term environmental goals.

Metso has secured an order from Fortress Minerals Inc. to supply a comprehensive suite of minerals processing equipment for two strategic projects in Malaysia: the Bukit Besi iron ore project and the Mengapur copper project. The order value, which is not disclosed, is booked in Minerals’ 2025 third-quarter orders received.

At the core of the order are two Metso HRCTM High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) - a key technology in energy-efficient comminution. The delivery also includes a Vertimill® vertical grinding mill, a Stirred Media Detritor (SMD), TankCell® flotation cells, vibrating screens, MD and slurry pumps, and MHCTM hydrocyclones. Most of the equipment in the delivery scope is part of the Metso Plus portfolio.

“This investment reflects the conclusion of a rigorous nine-month study into energy efficiency, availability, and process consistency. In the end, we placed our trust in Metso for their deep technical expertise, reliable product performance, and the strong support framework that assures long-term success for our operations,” said Mr. Ng Mun Fey, Chief Operating Officer and Project Leader at Fortress Minerals.

Frontrunner in flowsheet design: HRC™ HPGR plus Stirred mills

The HRC™ HPGR plus Stirred mill combination, where Metso is a frontrunner, is widely recognized as one of the most energy-efficient flowsheets for grinding, offering significantly lower operating costs compared to conventional horizontal mill circuit designs. The flanged roll HPGR technology, pioneered by Metso, optimizes energy consumption and minimizes circulating load due to its superior grinding action.

Fortress Minerals’ order contributes to the rapid expansion of Metso’s global HPGR installation base, reinforcing the growing demand for sustainable comminution solutions in the region. Through its comprehensive grinding portfolio (HRC™ HPGRs, horizontal mills, Vertimill®, HIGmillTM and Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) vertical grinding mills, Metso’s grinding solutions allow optimal configurations that address specific operational challenges, enhancing energy efficiency, availability, and reliability for its customers.

“This order is a great example of how our customers are embracing more energy-efficient and sustainable flowsheets,” said Kai Rönnberg, Vice President, Minerals Sales, Asia Pacific at Metso. “We are proud to support Fortress Minerals with advanced technologies that not only improve performance but also align with their long-term environmental goals.”
