Introduction:

ABB has been chosen by independent power producer ContourGlobal to upgrade the solar field control systems at four Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants in southwest Spain. The upgrade will support the safe and efficient integration of renewable energy into national grids, contributing to Europe’s energy transition goals.

Features:

The control systems, in operation for over a decade, will be upgraded to ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus SCADA, built on ABB’s AC500 and AC 800M platforms. This upgrade will deliver a scalable, high-performance control solution, ensuring long-term availability and improved cyber security for each CSP plant.

ABB’s solar tracking algorithms calculate the sun’s position every 480 milliseconds with an accuracy of 0.0001 degrees. This allows precise, continuous alignment of 7,400 mirrors, maximising energy output while adjusting for drift, terrain tilt and changing weather conditions.

The solution supports smooth integration with existing third-party systems and enables phased upgrades, reducing disruption and maintaining operational reliability.

The project is expected to be completed by February 2027.
