Top aluminum producer and recycler Novelis to increase uptime following ABB modernization

In an exciting collaboration, Novelis Inc., a prominent provider of sustainable aluminum solutions and a global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, has teamed up with ABB to embark on a cutting-edge modernization venture. This endeavor involves upgrading the drives and controls system of its hot rolling mill located in Oswego, New York, USA.

With a vision to futureproof the mill's operations, ABB is orchestrating the replacement of outdated equipment with state-of-the-art components such as switchgears, transformers, medium voltage drives, synchronous motors, motor control centers, and auxiliary controls. These advanced elements will seamlessly integrate with the mill's existing control system, enabling enhanced power capacity and bolstered reliability. The commissioning of this modernization is anticipated to be completed by the conclusion of 2023.

Initially established as Novelis' inaugural US operation, the Oswego mill has blossomed into the company's largest wholly owned fabrication facility in North America. It boasts the distinction of producing premium aluminum sheeting for diverse applications, including the automotive, beverage can, and building and construction sectors.
