Siemens data platform helps Northumbrian Water to tackle household leaks

6 September 2023

Siemens Grid Software has inked a significant contract with the Northumbrian Water Group (NWG), marking a pivotal step in their mission to bolster water leak detection and reduction efforts. As part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, they have deployed the cutting-edge EnergyIP® MDM X platform, setting a clear target to connect over a million smart water meters to this platform by 2030.

NWG, a prominent water utility provider serving 4.5 million individuals in the North East of England and the South East through Essex & Suffolk Water, is currently embarking on a substantial smart meter rollout initiative. These intelligent meters transmit data to the cloud on an hourly basis, presenting a golden opportunity for NWG to harness this information effectively. Siemens is offering a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution that will empower NWG to scrutinize this data meticulously, identifying any irregularities in household water consumption and promptly notifying customers of potential leaks on their properties.

This strategic move is not only aligned with NWG's objectives but also addresses the stringent leak reduction and per capita consumption targets set forth by UK water regulator Ofwat. Siemens, in close collaboration with NWG's team, has played a pivotal role in the design, development, testing, and launch of this meter data management SaaS. Leveraging the power of Siemens' EnergyIP® software, this solution stands as a monumental achievement—the largest of its kind implemented by Siemens for the European water industry and the largest deployment of grid software in the company's history.

EnergyIP® MDM X for Water seamlessly integrates into Siemens Xcelerator, the digital business platform designed to expedite digital transformation endeavors for customers, making it simpler, faster, and scalable.

Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Grid Software at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, emphasized the significance of this endeavor, stating, "Water is a precious resource, and we need to deal with it in the most sustainable way possible. EnergyIP® MDM X will enable NWG to make the best use of their data to reduce leakage and water consumption across their network. We're supporting the water industry by providing purposeful software technology for greater customer impact and sustainability."

Gary Adams, Head of Smart Transformation at NWG, underlined the critical role of the EnergyIP® MDM implementation in their smart metering journey. He expressed confidence that this initiative would allow NWG to effectively manage the substantial influx of metering data and drive operational efficiency for both their customers and the broader business. NWG envisions quick and easy access to granular smart data, all at the click of a button, and is counting on Siemens' expertise to turn this vision into reality, not only for the present but also for the future.
