Marathon Gold selects ABB as integrated process and power automation supplier for vital Valentine Gold Project

10 October 2023

Marathon Gold has entered into a contract with ABB to oversee the design and implementation of the process and power control system for its Valentine Gold Project in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, marking a significant stride towards the project's timely commencement. This agreement was officially recorded during the third quarter of 2023.

The Valentine Gold Project, presently in the construction phase, encompasses an open-pit mining and conventional milling operation and is poised to become a flagship endeavor for Marathon Gold. It stands as the largest untapped gold resource in the Atlantic Canada region. The company anticipates an annual gold production average of 195,000 ounces during the initial 12 years of the projected 14-year mine life. The project remains on track for mill commissioning in Q4 2024 and the commencement of gold production in Q1 2025.

Sachin Jari, Head of Mining, North America for ABB Process Industries, expressed enthusiasm regarding ABB's selection for this venture and their readiness to collaborate with the Marathon Gold team to ensure its successful execution. He highlighted the project's significance as a prominent gold mining operation in Canada and ABB's wealth of experience in managing similar projects both domestically and globally.

The scope of ABB's involvement encompasses the comprehensive design, supply, and commissioning of the project's process and power control systems, both integrated into the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS).

Furthermore, the consolidation of these previously separate systems into a single unified framework offers enhanced operational visibility to mine operators. This integration facilitates improved safety measures, heightened plant efficiency, rapid staff responsiveness, and increased profitability throughout the mining value chain. ABB's integrated automation system will also leverage ABB's Select I/O and Industrial Ethernet networks, streamlining project execution, mitigating potential late-stage changes or delays, and simplifying the evolution of the mine's automation systems across its planned production phases.
