28 August 2023

Huawei and Ericsson have entered into a comprehensive and long-term global patent cross-licensing accord, encompassing essential patents across a wide spectrum of standards including 3GPP, ITU, IEEE, and IETF standards for cellular technologies spanning 3G, 4G, and 5G. This strategic agreement embraces their respective networks and consumer device sales, thereby providing mutual access to patented and standardized technologies on a global scale.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei's Intellectual Property Department, expressed enthusiasm about the groundbreaking accord, stating, "We are thrilled to establish this enduring global cross-licensing agreement with Ericsson. As prominent contributors to standard essential patents (SEPs) in the mobile communication domain, our collaboration recognizes the intrinsic value of each other's intellectual property. This pact strengthens the patent ecosystem and underscores the shared belief in upholding and safeguarding intellectual property rights."

Huawei has demonstrated its substantial involvement in shaping mainstream ICT standards over the last two decades, encompassing cellular, Wi-Fi, and multimedia codecs. In 2022, Huawei secured the pinnacle position in the European Patent Office's list of patent applicants, having submitted a remarkable 4,505 patent applications.

Fan emphasized the overarching goal of propelling technological innovation through collaborative sharing. He added, "Our commitment to fostering the exchange of cutting-edge innovations will contribute to a thriving and sustainable industry landscape, yielding more robust products and services for consumers."

As a holder and implementer of SEPs, Huawei strives for an equitable approach to licensing. This landmark agreement signifies a balanced exchange of vital technologies. Fan emphasized, "This accord is the outcome of in-depth dialogues that have effectively catered to the interests of both patent holders and implementers, ensuring fairness in serving their needs."
