GE Vernova awarded Service Agreement for new combined cycle power plant in Senegal

6 October 2023

GE Vernova's Gas Power division has announced a significant 25-year service agreement with West African Energy for their 300-megawatt combined cycle power project in Cap des Biches, Dakar, Senegal. This strategic partnership aims to ensure the long-term availability and reliability of the power plant's gas turbines, thereby meeting Senegal's surging energy demands. In addition to this service agreement, GE Vernova will provide its Digital business' Asset Performance Management (APM) software in the cloud, facilitating predictive analytics throughout the power island, encompassing gas turbines and generators. The agreement was officially sealed at a ceremony in Senegal attended by Mr. Samuel Sarr, CEO of West African Energy, and Mr. Papa Toby Gaye, the General Secretary of SENELEC.

This comprehensive agreement covers the supply of parts, repairs, field services, and advanced predictive maintenance for the two GE Vernova 9E.03 gas turbines and related equipment. Samuel Sarr, CEO of West African Energy, emphasized their choice of GE Vernova due to their technological expertise and a proven track record in gas turbine services. He anticipates that GE Vernova's services and digital technologies will boost efficiency and enhance performance, critical factors in ensuring a reliable power supply for Senegal.

GE Vernova had previously secured the contract to provide two 9E.03 gas turbines, one STF-A200 steam turbine, three A39 generators, two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), and additional balance of plant equipment for this project. Their service agreements are meticulously designed to offer predictable maintenance costs while upholding high availability and reliability standards, including parts and outage planning. This agreement positions the combined cycle plant to benefit from GE Vernova's latest technology and extensive global experience. With over 1,000,000 installed megawatts across more than 120 countries, GE Vernova has established long-term agreements at over 1000 sites worldwide.

Kenneth Oyakhire, Services Managing Director of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Sub-Saharan Africa, expressed their pleasure at being chosen by West African Energy, affirming their commitment to helping the company meet energy production goals and support the Senegalese Government's initiatives to expand generation capacity through natural gas and renewables. He stressed the importance of reliability and efficiency in power plant operations and highlighted the confidence customers place in both their technology and regional service capabilities.

Notably, this project marks the introduction of GE Vernova's APM software in Senegal. Hosted in the cloud, APM leverages advanced predictive analytics from the APM Reliability application to analyze sensor data, enabling the early detection and diagnosis of equipment issues. Utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning-backed Digital Twins, Senegal can enhance asset reliability and availability while reducing operational and maintenance costs through a predictive approach. The Cap des Biches power plant, Senegal's first gas-to-power project, is poised to become the largest power plant in the country, providing over 25% of the nation's electricity and serving the equivalent of up to 500,000 Senegalese homes. The plant is slated to commence operations in phases beginning in 2024.
