ABB is first in world to deliver IE5 ultra-premium motor efficiency in explosive environments

5 September 2023

ABB has expanded its renowned IE5 SynRM (synchronous reluctance motor) series, introducing the groundbreaking IE5 SynRM Increased Safety motor. This innovation offers a unique solution for industries operating in hazardous areas, providing both safety and energy efficiency. These motors reduce energy losses by up to 40%, a remarkable advancement compared to commonly used IE3 motors.

The IE5 SynRM Increased Safety motor is engineered for use in potentially explosive environments, catering to various demanding variable speed industrial applications. It ensures precise control and high efficiency across the entire speed range, even under partial loads. This motor stands as the ideal replacement for standard induction motors in industries susceptible to explosive gases, vapors, or dust, such as oil and gas, chemicals, wood processing, and flour milling.

Beyond energy savings, these new SynRM motors offer cost-effective installation benefits. In Zone 1, their cooler operating design can substitute the need for a flameproof motor with a special enclosure. In Zone 2, the enhanced loadability of SynRM motors allows more power delivery from the same size as an induction motor, potentially utilizing a smaller, more cost-efficient motor for the same task.

Stefan Floeck, Division President IEC Low Voltage Motors at ABB, notes, "We have achieved a significant world-first by bringing the benefits of IE5 ultra-premium efficiency to the hazardous area sector. Adopting best-in-class technology has made our IE5 SynRM motors a game-changer for operators in a wide range of industries. They see the capability to improve energy-efficiency as key to achieving their net zero ambitions while optimizing their business costs."

An outstanding advantage of IE5 SynRM Increased Safety motors is their cooler operation compared to conventional designs, with reduced bearing temperatures by up to 15°C and winding temperatures by up to 30°C. This enhances reliability, extends motor lifespan, and reduces maintenance requirements.

The SynRM design combines the performance benefits of permanent magnet technology with the user-friendliness of an induction platform, all while maintaining an environmentally friendly design free of magnets or rare earth metals.

IE5 SynRM Increased Safety motors are available in output power ranging from 5.5 to 315 kilowatts (kW) in frame sizes IEC 132-315. This innovation promises to redefine safety and efficiency standards for industries operating in hazardous environments.
