Globe Valves

A globe valve (linear motion valve) stops, starts, and regulates flow. Traditionally, globe valves were used for throttling and isolating. The pressure drop through these valves can be used when the pressure drop through the valve does not matter (such as a gate, plug, ball, etc.).

Applications of Globe Valves

Common uses for globe valves include: cooling water systems, where flow must be controlled; fuel oil systems, where flow must be controlled and leak tightness is crucial; high-point vents and low-point drains, where leak tightness and safety are crucial factors; drains and seals for turbines.

The advantages of Globe Valves
  • The capacity to shut down and throttle effectively.
  • A shorter stroke (than a gate valve)
The disadvantages of Globe Valves
  • As compared to a gate valve, there is more pressure drop.
  • There is a need for more force or a bigger actuator (with pressure under the seat) to seat the valve.
