Severe Accident Simulation

Severe Accident Simulation

L3 MAPPS severe accident simulation addresses another level of nuclear power plant operator training. The power plant severe accident simulation solutions are followed by results on full scope real-time simulators. Effects resulting from the loss of reactor cooling, i.e. reactor core heat up, steam formation, fuel failure (reactor core melting) and hydrogen generation, can be reproduced by the severe accident simulation consisting of specialized models together with L3 MAPPS simulator models.

Highly sophisticated and specialized computer codes have been developed to analyze the consequences of severe accidents in nuclear power plants. However, these codes are designed to be used in an off-line, non-continuous and non-real time application. An example of such a design code is the Modular Accident Analysis Program (MAAP*). MAAP is an internationally recognized model that is used to analyze accidents and provided under license from EPRI.

The company supports both versions of MAAP currently used by most power plants (MAAP4 and MAAP5) and considers various processes that occur during severe accident conditions such as:

  • Steam formation
  • Reactor core heat-up
  • Cladding oxidation and H2 evolution
  • Reactor vessel failure
  • Reactor core debris-concrete interactions
  • Ignitions of combustible gases
  • Fluid entrainment by high-velocity gases
  • Fission product releases, transport and deposition

*A valid license to MAAP from EPRI is required prior to a customer being able to use MAAP with Licensee’s simulator products. EPRI does not endorse any third-party products or services.
