NuScale Selects U.S. Company for Design & Manufacturing of Key Power Plant Component

20 November 2018

Today, NuScale Power announced that it has selected Minnesota-based PaR Systems, LLC to begin engineering work for the manufacturing of its Reactor Building Crane (RBC), an important element of NuScale’s innovative nuclear plant design. The decision follows an intensive selection process involving several major U.S. nuclear crane suppliers. NuScale selected the best company to partner with for developing technology capable of producing the precision movements necessary to meet NuScale’s design requirements.

The RBC is a key component of the NuScale reactor building that houses the NuScale Power Modules™. PaR Systems will perform the design, engineering and subsequent precision movement testing for NuScale’s RBC. This announcement continues to demonstrate NuScale’s preparation for its first operational plant in Idaho by the mid-2020s.

“When making this important decision, NuScale knew it was necessary to find both an experienced nuclear crane supplier and a true industry leader in remote handling of critical equipment,” said Dale Atkinson, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nuclear Officer. “That’s why we’re pleased to begin work with the experts at PaR Systems, who have over 57 years of experience in the field.”

PaR Systems will start work in 2018 and is expected to continue the first phase of design work through 2019. NuScale intends to contract for the remaining design phases, initial design and design for manufacturing in 2019 and fabrication at a later date. PaR Systems is a leading supplier of material handling systems to both the U.S. government and commercial nuclear power industry. PaR’s headquarters and primary design team are located in Shoreview, MN, and has manufacturing capabilities in both Minnesota and Brunswick, GA.

“As an American company, we’re proud to support NuScale’s historic efforts to introduce the first U.S. SMR power plant,” said Jon Sakry, President for PaR Handling Solutions. “PaR Systems is a sophisticated robotic automation company that knows how to build nuclear cranes. We look forward to combining our decades of experience with NuScale’s nuclear expertise to engineer a crane that matches the rigorous needs of NuScale’s technology.”

NuScale’s technology is the world’s first and only SMR to undergo design certification review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and is scheduled to complete its review of NuScale’s design certification application in September 2020.
