ABB to provide integrated automation and electrical systems for Emami Cement in Odisha

16 December 2017

ABB India has received an order for an automation and electricial system for a 2 MPTA greenfield plant by Emami Cement, the flagship company of the Kolkata-based Emami Group. Emami is setting up advanced and energy-efficient cement plants to meet the future demand of cement coming out of steadily rising infrastructure spend in the country. The solution implemented will minimize energy consumption and enhance the overall plant performance helping the plant support infrastructure growth in the region.

ABB will be undertaking complete project imlementation including supply, erection, testing and commissioning for the electrical distribution and distributed control system (DCS). The 800xA DCS will help monitor, control and optimize the cement manufacturing process while maximising plant uptime. The electrical distribution system inlcudes 220 kV switchyard with 20/25 MVA 220kV/11kV Transformer, 11 kV Board, Intelligent Motor Control Center, Distribution transformer, medium- and low- voltage capacitors and allied accessories.

“India’s infrastructure and housing is an integral part of our country’s growth and we would like to ensure we contribute to the national cause providing best-in-class quality cement to our consumers, at the same time being environmentally responsible by deploying world-class technology and manufacturing process in our plants,” said Vivek Chawla, CEO, Emami Cement Limited.

ABB has had a long association with the Emami Group, having implemented automation, instrumentation and electrical solutions for their cement plant at Chhattisgarh and paper manufacturing facility at Odisha.

“ABB has been a key partner to cement companies transitioning as per evolving market demands and requirements to be globally more competitive with optimized energy usage and lower emissions,” said Madhav Vemuri, President, Industrial Automation, ABB India. “Our value proposition lies in the ability to offer and execute integrated process and power automation solutions backed by years of expertise to optimize processes for customers from mine to market. We specifically help optimise energy and raw material consumption that are two major costs in the sector,” he added.

India is the second largest cement producer in the world, accounting for 6.9 percent of world’s cement output. The sector has evolved over decades to become more globally competitive by adopting energy efficient and environment friendly technology to lower energy consmption and reduce carbon footprint. The government’s push for affordable housing, focus on infrastructure, roads and Smart City programs are likley catalysts for a gradual demand pick-up in the sector in the longer term.

Odisha is one the important cement manufacturing hubs of the country. The state is endowed with huge a reserve of various minerals, which also makes it a strategic location for various industrial companies. The two key raw materials for cement production are cement grade limestone and clay. Odisha has billion tons of proven limestone reserves. Also, the substantial production of slag and fly ash generated ensure that quality blended cement are also produced in Odisha.
