STMicroelectronics Launches Advanced GaN IC Platform for Motion Control, Setting New Standards in Factory Automation and Appliance Efficiency

STMicroelectronics, a leading global semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, has today unveiled its latest breakthrough in energy-efficient motion control: the GaNSPIN system-in-package GaN IC platform. This major introduction, publicized on November 24, 2025, marks a milestone in applying wide-bandgap gallium-nitride (GaN) technology to both white goods (home appliances) and factory automation, thereby promising significant advancements for European manufacturers, OEMs, and automation solution providers.

Central to the new platform is the integration of advanced 650V GaN power transistors, which are specifically engineered for high-performance 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor drives. The GaNSPIN platform's hallmark feature is its ability to deliver higher energy efficiency, reduce CO2 footprint, and achieve superior appliance and industrial drive performance, all in a more compact, cost-effective package. The GaNSPIN’s innovative features include a single package integrating both the driver and half-bridge power stage, utilizing the latest-generation GaN transistors for efficiency and speed. Also, it provides an integrated bootstrap diode for efficient high-side circuitry, as well as a fault-sensing comparator delivering rapid overcurrent protection with programmable disable times—strengthening both operational uptime and maintenance management strategies for plant operators. Importantly, the nominal slew rate (dV/dt) of 10V/ns in hard switching mode helps reduce electromagnetic interference, ensuring compliance with the European Union’s EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) directive. Adjustable turn-on slew rates allow engineers to tailor switching behaviors to the diverse requirements of industrial motor types.

The platform is designed for universal voltage compatibility, supporting both 110V and 230V AC offline applications—a key feature for white goods and factory automation systems deployed across Europe. This flexibility aids system integrators and technology vendors in standardizing solutions that lower both design complexity and supply chain overheads.
