Hitachi Construction Machinery Partners with Rio Tinto to Advance Remote Operation and Autonomous Mining Technologies

Hitachi Construction Machinery has entered into a strategic five-year Charter agreement with Technological Resources Pty, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of remote operation and partial autonomy technologies for ultra-large hydraulic excavators. This partnership marks a major milestone in industrial automation within the mining and construction machinery sector and responds directly to the increasing demand for smarter and safer operational practices at mining sites across the Asia-Pacific region.

The collaboration’s primary objective is to deliver advanced remote operation systems, operator-assist technologies, and partial autonomy functions. These innovations will enable operators to configure initial digging and dump positions, while the integrated automation platform handles the repeating tasks autonomously. Deployment of ultra-large hydraulic excavators equipped with these next-generation systems is scheduled for deployment at Rio Tinto’s Pilbara mining operations in Western Australia, serving as a critical testing ground for Asian and global mining implementations.

By targeting an interoperable platform for remote and autonomous operations by 2030, Hitachi Construction Machinery envisions a mining landscape where excavators can be centrally managed, optimizing productivity and safety through advanced automation. The agreement extends previous cooperation between Rio Tinto and Hitachi, which focused on evaluating operator-assist technologies and machine durability, now transitioning into practical applications under diverse and dynamic site conditions.

Hiroshi Kanezawa, executive officer and vice president of the Mining Business Unit at Hitachi Construction Machinery, articulated the company’s forward-looking vision under the ‘LANDCROS’ concept. This framework prioritizes customer-centric, open, and reliable automation solutions in mining and heavy construction, fostering greater interoperability and value across complex site operations. According to company statements, ongoing collaboration with Rio Tinto—renowned for mining operations expertise—will be instrumental in driving the adoption of versatile and highly scalable automation systems throughout the industry.
