ABB low voltage protection for electric vehicle charging units

ABB recently supplied Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) to Signet Systems, Inc. for KIA Motors electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The 20kW, medium-speed chargers were destined for KIA’s European market (KME) and required compliance with IEC standards as well as the local Korean electrical KC certification.

“With many governments supporting the growth of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the EV charging stations market is expected to grow significantly by 2020,” says Sergio Rizzi, Segment Manager for e-Mobility and he added “ABB is well positioned to supply AC and DC charging stations with low voltage protection devices.”

ABB’s B Type Residual Current Devices are necessary to protect users of EV chargers against fault currents even in presence of pure DC leakage current. In addition, ABB offers an AP-R solution (anti perturbation delayed) which helps avoid unwanted tripping without compromising the protection against earth fault currents. “The combination of these two functions into a compact device is an ideal solution to meet the market requirements of EV-chargers,” commented Aravind Ramachandran, Product Marketing Manager for RCDs in ABB.

The power of electric vehicle chargers is expressed in kilowatts (kW) – the higher the kW the faster the vehicle gets charged. Electrical vehicle are fed through EV chargers, in AC or DC current. Straight from the grid, AC charging stations are less expensive as they do not require inverters and provide current directly to the on-board vehicle charger. DC charging stations supply current to the vehicle battery and usually provide less time to charge.
