German engineering major Siemens AG said Friday that the 800-MW BorWin 2 offshore wind grid connection in the North Sea has been handed over to TenneT and is now fully operational.
The German-Dutch transmission system operator (TSO) had previously contracted Siemens for five high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connections, BorWin 2 being the first one. The next three, namely Sylwin 1, HelWin 1 and HelWin 2, are close to completion and are expected to start commercial operations in the first six months of 2015, Siemens noted.
The fifth one, BorWin 3, is seen to become operational in 2019.
Overall, the five links will be able to supply wind power to some five million German homes. BorWin 2 alone has the capacity to supply about one million households.
