Yokogawa Electric will supply the control system for the Kamojang geothermal power station in Indonesia to monitor and control Unit 5’s steam turbine and auxiliary facilities.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy struggles to meet growing power demands, Indonesia calls on what are the world’s largest geothermal energy resources, planning many projects to develop this alternative fuel source. The Kamojang geothermal power station in Garut has been in operation for more than 30 years (exploration in the area actually dates back to Dutch colonial times), and now it’s growing even further.
Yokogawa Electric has been busy in Indonesia’s geothermal industry as well, as it supplies its 11th control system for geothermal power plants in the country. Yokogawa’s Centum CS 3000 integrated production control system is used in Kamojang’s Unit 4 and now Yokogawa will monitor and control Unit 5 as well.
The Kamojang geothermal plant is owned and operated by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), the geothermal arm of the state-run oil and gas company, Pertamina. Unit 5 will have a 35 MW power generation capacity, and its construction is scheduled to be completed by July 2015.
To monitor and control Unit 5’s steam turbine and auxiliary facilities, Yokogawa Engineering Asia and Yokogawa Indonesia will supply the Centum VP integrated production control system, InsightSuite AE plant asset effectiveness optimization services, PRM plant resource manager, Exaquantum plant information management system (PIMS), and a plant operation training simulator.
The order for this project was received through Tokyo Denki Sangyo, a Yokogawa sales agent, and placed by Fuji Electric, which is responsible for manufacturing and delivering the unit’s steam turbine and generator.
Geothermal energy does not emit CO2, and can generate a stable supply of electricity day and night, and in all weather conditions. To grow its industrial automation and control business and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, Yokogawa is targeting renewable energy fields such as geothermal power. As such, the company will be seeking to expand the provision of its solutions in Indonesia and other geothermal resource-rich countries.
