Swiss-Swedish industrial group ABB (VTX:ABBN) has won a USD-130-million (EUR 123m) cable system order from Danish utility Dong Energy A/S for the 660-MW Walney Extension offshore wind farm in the UK.
The Walney Extension will be built off the northwest coast of England, next to the existing 367-MW Walney offshore wind farm.
Under the contract, ABB will design, manufacture, supply and commission the 220-kV alternating current (AC) extruded cable system. It includes more than 157 km (97.6 miles) of submarine cable to link the two wind farms to each other and to shore, as well as 24 km of underground cable to the grid.
When completed, the two wind farms will be able to generate clean electricity for more than 800,000 households, according to the statement.
Separately, Dong Energy today announced it has picked Siemens' newly-unveiled 7-MW offshore wind turbine for the second 330-MW phase of the Walney Extension.
